I love reading about everything. I'm not a book snob. Lately I have been "reading" a lot of picture books to my toddler and baby. In my past life before motherhood, I was a professional technical editor and writer.

  1. I don’t know as though I have any one favorite topic. Admittedly I don’t read that much as I don’t have that much time though so book reviews are mostly stuff I haven’t read anyway. I do personally like random personal bits of your journey and poetry.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, it’s very helpful. I understand about how busy life can get. I can relate on the book review part, I don’t typically read a lot of book reviews myself, so I’m thinking of maybe cutting them from IL. Thank you for the blog nomination it means a lot that you thought of IL. I’m terrible about following up with tags/nominations /awards. I will go check it out now!😆

  2. I follow your blog primarily because of numbers 3 and 4. Ninety percent of the blogs I follow are, like yours, involved in some creative effort, usually writing. Poetry I like very much because of the intensity of language as well as the brevity. The writer’s journey is also of Great importance to me, because I’m doing the same! 🙂 I want to hear what other writers are going through and to be truthful I am glad to receive good advice and ideas, which I do receive. And of course your blog is such a source!

    Now, I also enjoy photography. I consider my self a VERY amateur photographer, but I love it. So, your husband’s pictures are an added treat. They are amazing.

    So thank you for this opportunity. I think this is the first time anyone has asked me this question.

  6. I would simply recommend writing anything that expresses your most significant interests, rather than worry about categories. If you write from passion your readers will be instantly fulfilled because “you” will shine through. I remember a song from someone back in the ’70s with the line “Be who you are/that’s part of the plan.”

  7. Hi Rachel, I like your website because its diversity but I particularly like your journey as a writer. I like to read about what challenges and wins other writers have. Writing can be a lonely job! I love the photography too. The book reviews I’d read only if I had the time. Just a wee suggestion, it’s important to think about who your target audience is or will be will you launch your book. What parts of your website will they most likely engage in?

      1. Maybe you could have two websites? One for your journey as a writer and the big lead up to your published book (with still lots of good photography), and the other for the other stuff.

    Still my suggestions are :
    1. Poetry (I love to read deep meaning words yet simple)
    2. Personal essays (I love to read and know more about different people from different places)
    3. Picture pick friYAY (whenever I go through my reader, I may miss some blogs but I don’t miss photography… I always love the posts containing images, as they enhance the power of your words)
    4. My journey as a writer
    4. Book reviews
    They both are 4. Because I give equal attention to both of them…

  9. I definitely like the picture days. And a lot of what I’ve read in your personal thoughts on writing/life are very insightful and different from some other sites covering similar topics.

    Book reviews can be tough. I tend to only review books that I feel very strongly others should read. Sometimes I go quite a while without writing about books at all.

    The biggest thing is to be content with what you want and what you’re getting out of such a personal thing as a blog.

    I also love reading your book reviews because I get to know so much.
    Also I love your blog because you have so much compassion and understanding of the world.

  12. I’m not an official “follower,” so sorry if this comment seems a bit out of the blue–but I do have your blog bookmarked and am reading it regularly! For me, it’s a way to keep in touch and feel a bit more connected with you and Miles, since I don’t get to see the Washington branch of the family regularly. So, I’m a big fan of the personal essays and photos, but I’m also really enjoying hearing about your journey as a writer! I’ll be honest, I usually skip the books reviews and poetry 🙂
