Everyone Is A House With Four Rooms

Image result for everyone is a house with four rooms

I came across this quote about a year ago and I reflect on it often. I do tend to dwell in one room most of the day. When I was more active with writing, I was pacing back and forth in the mental and the emotional rooms. Lately, though, I have been spending most of my time in the physical.

I have started working out daily. I’m also exhausted from taking care of the baby and my toddler. Working out has done a lot to make me feel better about my post-partum body but I do find that I miss walking through the other rooms: the mental, emotional, and the spiritual.

We need balance in our lives, but how do you find your equilibrium when most often we are pulled in one direction?

Which room have you been standing in when you look out the window?

I love reading about everything. I'm not a book snob. Lately I have been "reading" a lot of picture books to my toddler and baby. In my past life before motherhood, I was a professional technical editor and writer.

  1. Been busting ass at work the past few weeks so definitely the physical; had very little time for myself. That’s OK; I’ll be able to spend some time in emotional and spiritual tomorrow when I go under the needle again. The tattooing process really does center me. It’s meditative almost.

It’s been hard to find balance lately but I hope to correct that soon.

      1. Oh you know I will. It won’t be totally new; it’s just adding color to a piece I started about a month ago. It’s just such a large piece that we had to do the B&G and color in separate sessions.

  2. I would actually like to be in the physical room a lot more than I am/have been. I find that I’m happiest when I’m out and about. But unfortunately life doesn’t always work out that way, and it can be tough walking through a rough patch of mental and emotional turmoil. I hope you find the balance in life you are looking for. It’s a very thought provoking quote.

  3. I have read this quote before and I’m so glad to re-read it here…I’m also glad to read your beautiful words again…as to which rooms I’ve been spending time in, the emotional room has seen the most activity which means I better visit those other rooms, pronto!

  4. What an interesting quote, Rachel. Hmmm, I think I’ve had the good fortune to be in all four rooms lately…maybe a bit too long in the mental room, which is always dangerous! but I’ve been trying hard lately to get balance in my life, you know, taking daily walks with Cody our black lab, reading, talking and laughing with my wife, and meditating. The meditation seems to be the anchor for everything. It helps a ton with everything–especially with writing.
