Enchantress
White columns with perfumed flowers,
surround a sitar player in the night.
The opal moon crosses the ocean,
sneaking up behind her,
shining on the golden leaves that are her hair.
A canary pupil perches on her shoulder,
learning the magical music she creates.
The sitar player is neither woman nor beast,
merely part of the jungle.
This young man is easily enchanted.
Like many before me,
I follow her lure.

Thank you so much. For some reason posting my poetry makes me feel more vulnerable than anything else.

I understand. I have a poem I wrote my senior year of high school that I entered into a contest. I felt incredibly vulnerable then too but somehow it was good enough for publication – go figure.
I also have another published one that was published like two years ago – same circumstances. Again, I know the vulnerability.
It is especially true in my case. My poems are very depressing in nature. As someone who battles depression it’s just what comes out. I’ve tried writing happy stuff and it just sucks. My best works are my sad ones lol.

I totally get it. Have you published either poem on your blog? Did I miss them?

No I have not. I might do so in the near future though.

I recently posted a poem on my blog and felt vulnerable as well, perhaps we can’t hide behind as many words! And now Poem #2 is making itself known! Before I even read your words, you had me with your beautiful title and picture!

You have a real gift in articulate expression, Rachel. I find that a singular style in writing that’s very enjoyable. And I completely understand about the vulnerability, I haven’t posted anything with the personal category in a while because it feels too open! Even though I never got any negative feedback from it, just the idea of it is a little anxiety provoking. But please keep posting things like these, I realize the irony in what I’m about to say but despite me feeling fear with this type of self expression, I can’t tell you how much I enjoy exploring other people’s. It’s a beautiful thing.

Hi Fatimah, thank you so much for your encouragement! I understand, I love reading other writer’s poetry, but I am extremely critical of my own.
